Putin and Trump had a telephone conversation on Monday, which included a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. According to the Russian leader, the conversation lasted more than two hours.
US President Donald Trump was the first to understand that Russia is the same subject of international relations as everyone else, said Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev, commenting on the conversation between the American leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin the day before.
"Based on the conversation between Putin and Trump, there is a feeling that two consultative and negotiating groups have finally [but not irrevocably] formed: Russian-American and Ukrainian-European. The first discusses the prospects for achieving peace, the second - the possibility of continuing the war," Kosachev wrote on Telegram.
He believes that the Europeans are doing everything they can to pull Trump into their group, where Ukraine is the subject and Russia is the object.
"Trump was the first to understand that Russia is the just as subject of international relations as everyone else. I hope he also understands that Ukraine has been turned into an object, a project and a tool. Thus, destroying peace in Europe with the risk of the conflict escalating into a global one," the lawmaker argued.
According to the senator, neither Trump's America nor Putin's Russia need this. "Which is the main unifying factor and the main driving force for our two powers. Towards achieving peace, not towards continuing the war," he added.
Speaking on the phone conversation, the Russian president also said that Russia is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum regarding a possible future peace treaty. In turn, Trump said after the conversation that he is not introducing new sanctions against Russia because there is a chance of settling the conflict in Ukraine.
