Ethiopia’s Honey Revolution: Nature’s Bounty with Global Impact
This World Bee Day, Ethiopia has more than just a reason to celebrate — it has a vision.
Guided by PM Abiy Ahmed’s “Ye Lemat Tirufat” (Bounty of the Basket) initiative, the country is positioning honey not just as a product, but as a pillar for rural development, export growth, and ecological sustainability.
“One of the commodities identified is the production of honey… taking into consideration the job opportunities it may create for youngsters and women,” Dr. Alemayehu Mekonnen, Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Agriculture, told Sputnik Africa.
Ethiopia’s honey is not just abundant—it’s exceptional. Thanks to its diverse agroecologies and rich flora, Ethiopian honey is known for its medicinal quality and organic purity.
“This was a gift given by nature to our country,” Dr. Alemayehu proudly noted. With varieties such as acacia and eucalyptus nectar, the honey stands out in global markets for both flavor and therapeutic value.
But Ethiopia isn’t stopping there. It’s stepping boldly into innovation—moving toward pesticide regulations to protect pollinators, pushing for laboratory certification to meet international standards, and exploring new, non-invasive technologies for honey harvesting.
