Senegal's Ousmane Sonko Says ECOWAS Should 'Learn Lessons' From AES Withdrawal

The Senegalese PM explained the reasons for the AES withdrawal from the West African economic bloc in an interview with Burkinabe media.

"If there is a coup d'état, what led to it? And why doesn't ECOWAS speak up when people manipulate constitutions? When opponents are oppressed, why is there no comment from ECOWAS? It's only when situations reach a certain point that statements are released, embargoes are imposed, and military intervention is threatened," he argued.

He also confirmed Senegal's intention to strengthen cooperation with Burkina Faso, despite its withdrawal from ECOWAS.

“We have 20 agreements in force and 23 more in the process. This will not stop our partnership, but only strengthen it. The priority is security and the economy,” Sonko emphasized.
