About 20,000 People Flee Nigerian Town Amid Unprecedented Terrorist Threat, State Governor Says
Displaced youth could be recruited by insurgents if left in camps, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum said in Marte town.
Currently, Marte town is the only settlement out of more than 300 in the district that has not yet fallen to Boko Haram* and ISWAP* terrorists, the official warned.
"If we cannot maintain this one, then we will lose the whole local government to the insurgents, [...] and I think we will not allow this to happen," Zulum stated, urging the government to take decisive measures.
Boko Haram attacked the town on May 9, but the Nigerian army took it back by Saturday. The governor recalled this was the second time Marte had been resettled — the first was four years ago.
* terrorist organizations outlawed in Russia and many other states
