ICJ Rules in Favor of Equatorial Guinea in Decades-Long Island Dispute with Gabon
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has awarded sovereignty over three small islands in the oil-rich Gulf of Guinea to Equatorial Guinea.
In a final, binding ruling, the court recognized Equatorial Guinea’s claim based on a 1900 colonial-era convention, dismissing Gabon’s claim rooted in a 1974 agreement lacking treaty status.
The ruling requires Gabon to withdraw troops from Mbanié Island, which it has occupied since 1972. The dispute was revived in the 2000s due to potential offshore oil reserves and was formally brought to the ICJ in 2016 after UN mediation.
