Zimbabwe's Steel Industry Cheers New Import Regulations

Zimbabwe's Steel Industry Cheers New Import Regulations
The regulations, requiring licenses for specific iron and non-alloy steel products, aim to protect the local industry and reclaim Zimbabwe's status as a regional steel production hub.
The collapse of the Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company in 2008 was a major setback, but the launch of Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Disco) signals a rebound.
While some advocate for stronger protections, the new regulations are generally viewed as positive, Disco's Wilfred Motsi told media, calling it a "dual win." He also urged reviews for unregulated or non-locally produced items.
According to Engineering Iron and Steel Association CEO Matthias Ruziwa, the measures will:
🟠boost domestic manufacturing;
🟠reduce imports;
🟠create jobs;
🟠conserve foreign currency.
