Rwanda Welcomes First Group of Genocide-Era Refugees Returning to Their Soil From DRC
A total of 360 refugees have safely returned to Rwanda through Rubavu District, which borders DRC's North Kivu Province.
"They will receive support before reintegration into national development programs," the Rwandan Ministry in charge of Emergency Management said.
The return of refugees who were held in Eastern DRC for years by FDLR rebels — a group linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide — is part of a larger effort to bring back over 2,500 Rwandans.
"We are happy to welcome our compatriots. They are a valuable workforce for the country’s development," media quoted Rubavu's Mayor Prosper Mulindwa as saying at the repatriation ceremony.
