Over 1,000 Laid Off as Sierra Leone's Biggest Diamond Miner Halts Operations Amid Pay & Working Conditions Dispute

Koidu miner's workers were paid only 30% of their dollar-linked wages because the company used an old 2016 exchange rate, and had poor working conditions like no clean water or proper toilets, a leader of its union told a UK news agency.

Earlier, First Lady Fatima Bio attended a peaceful protest by Koidu workers, calling on the company to "improve working conditions and provide better services for all employees."

Koidu, a subsidiary of a UK-based company, founded by Israeli billionaire Beny Steinmetz's BSG Resources, rejected the first lady's perceived "unlawful interference" and claimed losses exceeding $16 million due to strikes.

"Everything is being done to resolve the impasse," Sierra Leone Information Minister Chernor Bah reportedly said.
