Africa’s Hidden Geological Treasures Deserve a Global Spotlight
Africa is sitting on a goldmine of geological heritage — but the world barely knows about it.
With only two UNESCO Global Geoparks on the continent (in Morocco and Tanzania), Rita Bissoonauth, Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office to the AUC and ECA, is urging action:
“Africa has a lot of potential… what we need more to do is more to be aware of our geological heritage, to have more coordination, but also capacity building,” she told Sputnik Africa.
Speaking at a regional workshop in Addis Ababa, Bissoonauth emphasized that the groundwork has already been laid:
“We have already built the capacity in 45 African countries… what we need now is to build up the nomination file, to submit it, and then it comes.”
ℹ UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified areas that showcase sites of international geological significance while promoting sustainable tourism, education, and community development.
