"Vladimir Putin has more room for maneuver in negotiations," Carlos Manuel Lopez Alvarado of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) told Sputnik.
The Russian president could even agree to some Ukrainian demands, as long as they don't conflict with key issues such as territorial matters and Kiev's non-accession to NATO, according to the expert.
Putin's peace talks proposal came at a favorable moment for Russia following the success of Victory Day, which united various countries and leaders and further highlighted the multipolarity of the world, he noted.
A formal peace deal may not be reached by May 15, but negotiations could set the stage for long-term conflict resolution, and a durable peace might be possible later this year, Alvarado pointed out.
The geopolitical landscape is currently favorable for Russia, UNAM expert Daniel Garay Saldana emphasized.
"Putin feels confident, first and foremost, in the position of someone who can make proposals reflecting his own perspective," the expert said.
