'To Know Where We Come From': South African Defense Minister Visits Freedom Fighter Grave in Moscow
Moses Kotane was a key figure in the anti-apartheid movement. After decades as secretary general of the South African Communist Party, he died in the Soviet Union in 1978.
Originally buried in Moscow, Kotane's body was repatriated in 2015. However, his memory remains at his original gravesite.
"It's very important even for our children to know where we come from with Russia, where we come from historically. And I'm really happy that even if we repatriated his remains ourselves and the Russian government were able to have a memorial site for him," Minister Angie Motshekga told Sputnik Africa.
The minister came to Moscow as part of the South African delegation to take part in the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory over Nazism.
