Victory Day
Sputnik Africa delves into the final events of the Great Patriotic War.
On this day in 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered, marking the end of WWII in Europe. The Red Army’s heroic efforts led to:
🟠 Bornholm’s liberation – 11,138 German troops captured after refusing to surrender.
🟠 Terezin Ghetto freed – 11,068 Jewish prisoners saved.
🟠 Prague’s liberation – Soviet soldiers greeted with tears, hugs, and flowers.
Fighting continued into late May, with over 1.3 million German soldiers surrendering to Soviet forces.
The cost of freedom was immense: over one million Soviet soldiers gave their lives across Europe.
