The 200-kilometer Kalumbila-Kolwezi project aims to bolster regional energy trade and entice private investment, according to Zambian officials.
The initiative is vital for the mining industry, which has been struggling with recent energy shortages.
Following a severe drought, some Zambian copper mines had to buy electricity from South Africa. Others were asked to cut back on usage last year.
