In honor of International Workers' Day celebrated on May 1, AfroVerdict features an interview with Kassahun Follo, President of the Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions, about May Day's significance and Ethiopia's growing labor movement.
As nations worldwide mark International Workers' Day on May 1, Ethiopia celebrates its rich labor history. Having "inspired the formation of labor unions and workers' associations" in Ethiopia, this historic day "played a key role in advocating for workers and spreading literacy among the Ethiopian workforce," according to Kassahun Follo, President of the Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions.
The holiday took on special meaning during Ethiopia's industrialization period.
"The May Day celebration in Ethiopia is a promotion of labor rights and awareness," Follo notes, highlighting how the day became a platform for worker education and economic progress.
Ethiopia's labor movement continues to make strides in supporting its workforce. The Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions actively works across all sectors, as Follo describes.
"We are organizing the workers. We are training the workers. We are giving legal service at all levels," he notes.
Follo also highlights Ethiopia's participation in international partnerships like BRICS as opportunities for worker advancement.
"BRICS can give support and infrastructure in industrial projects. If well managed, this can create jobs with improved standards and protections in Ethiopia," he states.
