DRC Seeks to Prosecute Former President Kabila for Insurgency Support
The army's attorney general has formally requested the Senate to revoke Joseph Kabila's immunity as a senator for life, Justice Minister Constant Mutamba said, adding that the request cites evidence of "war crimes, crimes against humanity, and massacres."
Mutamba urged Kabila to return to the DRC to face justice, warning that he could be tried in absentia.
Kabila, who has been out of the country since late 2023, mostly residing in South Africa, left office in 2018 after nearly two decades in power. Despite his absence, he stated last month his intention to return and help resolve the crisis in eastern Congo.
Kabila's path to power began in 2001 following his father's assassination. His refusal to step down when his term ended in 2016 led to deadly protests before he eventually left office after the 2018 election.
