Decolonizing Education: Africa Must Teach for Itself

“Most of the African education system is imported… and as a result it has some ideological and also colonial overtones in many ways,” Kora Tushune, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Education, told Sputnik Africa.

Speaking on on the sidelines of the Innovation Africa 2025 Ministerial Summit for Education, ICT & Skills held in Addis Ababa, he called for a fundamental shift:

“Decolonization means adapting education to our local needs and valuing our cultural and traditional values… to solve the African problem.”

Africa, he argued, must reclaim its curriculum — and its confidence — to build solutions rooted in its own identity.
