08:34 27.04.2025 (Updated: 08:35 27.04.2025) Vladimir Putin had confirmed Russia's readiness for negotiations with Ukraine without preconditions during a meeting with Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday.
Russia is showing its interest in putting an end to the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible, Alexey Martynov, associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of Russia and head of the International Institute of Newly Established States, told Sputnik.
"Russia, as well as the United States, actually, is showing its interest in putting an end to the Ukrainian crisis as soon as possible. Zelensky, on the other hand, is bargaining for his guarantees, understanding that he is a redundant character in the current situation. Russia is actually ready to resume talks without any conditions. Our position is known, published, and voiced," Martynov noted.
Moscow rightly considers the Istanbul agreements, which were never implemented, as a basis for possible negotiations with Kiev, he added.
"All this is an exchange of signals. This is our position, and it is widely known. There is clearly progress, and very good progress. Another important thing is that the phrase 'negotiations without preconditions' means that both sides have no preconditions ... The point is to sit down and start talking," the professor emphasized.
