Botswana Aims to Unlock Tourism Potential Through Infrastructure Development, Legislative Reforms
If managed efficiently, tourism could become Botswana's top GDP contributor, potentially "overtaking diamonds," President Duma Boko stated at the 40th Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana Annual Conference.
"Infrastructure is the backbone of tourism. Through collaboration with other ministries, we are prioritizing road, air, and digital infrastructure that supports the sector," Tourism Minister Wynter Mmolotsi said in his turn.
Botswana needs "to wrestle with some of the attendant challenges and problems" to grow the industry," the president noted.
According to Botswana's top official the current challenges are:
▪inefficiencies in bureaucratic processes, such as delays in lease renewals;
▪foreign destination management companies that profit off of Botswana without paying local taxes;
▪inefficient transportation and marketing system.
