Mali Introduces New Malaria Vaccine in Historic Step Toward Disease Elimination
Launch of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccination program in Mali coincides with World Malaria Day celebrations on Friday, the Ministry of Health said.
What do we know about Mali’s new push against malaria?
▫Mali acquired 927,800 doses of the R21/Matrix-M;
▫R21/Matrix-M will benefit 600,000 children aged 5 to 36 months across 19 districts in Mali;
▫The vaccination is free for Malians;
▫It has an efficacy rate of 75%, approved by WHO and already adopted by 19 countries worldwide.
In 2024, Mali recorded 3,789,689 confirmed malaria cases, including 2,659,896 mild cases and 1,129,793 severe cases, resulting in 1,638 deaths, the Ministry of Health noted.
