US State Department Eliminating Body Tasked With Overseeing Climate Negotiations, Report Says
Staff of the Office of Global Change, which handles the US's international climate policy, learned of the decision Thursday afternoon, US newspaper Politico reported.
"This will hamstring international climate cooperation at the worst possible time," one of the officials reportedly said, given that the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) is scheduled for November.
Earlier this week, US State Secretary Marco Rubio unveiled a plan to reorganize the department, cutting bureaucracy and boosting efficiency. The plan is expected to reduce staff by 15% and close over 130 local offices.
