Russian Jazz Legend Honors Fallen Sailors with Saxophone Tribute in South Africa
As part of his visit to the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Igor Butman performed a piece dedicated to the Russian Navy at a monument in Simon’s Town on Thursday.
This monument, located near South Africa's principal naval base, is one of the few memorials honoring 19th-century Russian sailors who found their final resting place on the African continent.
Butman's performance carries added significance, as 2025 is being celebrated in Russia as the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland.
At the festival, Butman will also headline several concerts and events, representing the Russian jazz school at one of Africa's largest musical venues.
