MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Members of the US Democratic Party want former President Joe Biden and his wife Jill to limit their public appearances so as not to ruin the party's image amid persistent anger or indifference toward the former leader among Democrats, American media reported, citing staffers close to them.
Biden gave his first public speech since leaving office on January 20 at a disability rights event in Chicago on April 16.
"I love both Bidens dearly, but staff loyalty means there is a responsibility to provide them with an honest situational awareness, especially when it comes to their public image, no matter how hurtful it is to hear," Michael LaRosa, Jill Biden’s former communications director, told the publication.
LaRosa called the situation "a heartbreaking and tragic ending to their time in public life," but the Bidens still need to face reality when making decisions about public appearances, he stressed. Larosa argues that Biden’s return to the stage was a "lovely gift for the White House, President Trump and conservative media" at a time when they were under intense scrutiny over trade policy.
Some Democrats, according to the publication, said they would prefer to see the former president take a back seat while the party worked to repair its image. Other Democrats also told the publication that now was not the right time for Biden to emerge, especially given polls that show Americans are beginning to blame President Donald Trump for his handling of the economy.
