DRC Suspends Former President Joseph Kabila's Political Party Amidst Rising Tensions
The Interior Ministry cited Kabila's "overt activism" days after security services raided his properties. Kabila and his People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD) are accused of supporting M23 rebels fighting government forces in eastern DRC and even of plotting an insurgency.
Kabila, who led the country for 18 years until 2019, reportedly left the DRC before the 2023 presidential election but recently announced his intention to return because the country was "in peril." There is speculation he may be in, or en route to, the city of Goma, currently held by M23.
The ministry condemned Kabila's "ambiguous attitude" towards the M23 rebellion, and criticized his purported decision to enter the country through Goma.
Separately, the Justice Ministry is planning to initiate legal proceedings against Kabila for alleged "direct participation" in the M23 rebellion.
