Moldova Aims to Sever Historical & Cultural Ties With Russia, Following Ukraine's Precedent, Brazilian Journo Says

"They [Moldovan government] want to destroy everything that is in one way or another connected with Russia," Brazilian journalist and public figure Lucas Leiroz told Sputnik, commenting on Moldova's barring Archbishop Markell from traveling to Jerusalem.

Mirroring Ukraine's actions, Chisinau will target institutions and symbols linked to Russian influence, such as the Moldovan Orthodox Church, the journalist noted.

"Since Orthodoxy is a fundamental aspect of Russian identity, the Moldovan government will now begin to take harsher measures against the Orthodox faith, given that the Moldovan Orthodox Church is part of the Moscow Patriarchate," he argued.

In doing so, the authorities disregard the cultural and religious sentiments of the Moldovan people, who are themselves Orthodox, the speaker emphasized.

"Moldova has chosen a course similar to that of Ukraine, pursuing a foreign agenda of automatic accession to the EU and a strong rejection of Moscow," Leiroz explained.
