NEW DELH (Sputnik) - On Thursday, Moldovan media reported that Bishop Markel, who heads one of the dioceses of the Orthodox Church in the country, was detained at the Chisinau airport for a lengthy security check which ended up preventing him from boarding his flight to Israel on time.
The leader of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the state of Goa, Savio Rodrigues, in a comment for Sputnik on Friday condemned the detention of Archbishop Markel of Balti and Falesti by the Moldovan authorities in Chisinau airport, which disrupted his Easter trip to Jerusalem.

"By detaining the Moldovan Archbishop Markel, who was on his way to Jerusalem for the Holy Fire, the Moldovan authorities seem to have clearly infringed upon the religious beliefs of the church and its followers," Rodrigues said.

Religion and politics shouldn't be mixed, the official emphasized.

"The Holy Fire is part of the protocol, process and tradition of the Orthodox Church, which is adhered to by around three-fourths of the population. It is a respected institution in Moldova. Therefore, I condemn the detention of Archbishop Markel by Moldovan authorities," he noted.
