1890s-1923: British South Africa Company, founded by Cecil Rhodes, begins colonial control. The area becomes known as Southern Rhodesia;

1965: Prime Minister Ian Smith declares independence as Rhodesia under white minority rule—sparking international sanctions and armed resistance;

The ZANU-PF movement and other liberation fighters launch a guerrilla war against the regime;

April 18, 1980: Victory—Zimbabwe is officially recognized as an independent republic.
