Tanzanian Gov't Achieves Progress in Public Spending Amid Persistent Challenges, Controller & Auditor General Says

"The encouraging part is that, overall, there has been a noticeable increase in efficiency in managing government resources, despite the challenges highlighted," Controller and Auditor General (CAG) Charles Kichere told reporters.

The CAG emphasized increased transparency and accountability in expenditure for the fiscal year ending June 2024 but urged the government to address inefficiencies in financial management.

Key challenges outlined by the CAG undermining further progress:

▪Inefficient spending: $138.2 million wasted in 12 of 217 parastatals;

▪Mismanaged funds: $1.3 million not deposited into government accounts by local authorities;

▪Non-value spending: $140.7 million spent on non-essential activities;

▪Total debt rose to $36.2 billion (up 18% from $30.6 billion the last fiscal year).
