On Thursday, Moldovan news outlets reported that Archbishop Markell of Balti and Falesti, a leader in one of the Orthodox Church dioceses in the country, was held at Chisinau airport. After an extensive inspection, he was unable to catch his flight to Israel.
The Moldovan authorities are fully aware of what they are doing by disrupting the Orthodox Holy Week, particularly with the incident involving Archbishop Markell at Chisinau airport, Roman Lunkin, director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Sputnik Africa.
"This anti-ecclesiastical policy, whether in Moldova, Ukraine, or the Baltic countries, follows a similar pattern. These petty dictators are trying to build their own church, catering to their nationalist interests and to European integration or European values as they understand them. The church must be obedient and as far removed as possible from previous traditions," he explained.
This campaign of pressure is reaching its peak in Moldova and could lead to the liquidation of the Church and the confiscation of certain assets, the expert adds.
