Lake Chad Basin Unites to Vaccinate 83 Million Children Against Polio VariantCameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria have launched a synchronized polio vaccination campaign targeting children under five. Running from April 24–28, the campaign aims to halt the spread of variant poliovirus type 2, which has caused 140 paralysis cases out of 210 detections in the past year.Supported by 1.1 million frontline workers, the initiative focuses on high-risk border areas where virus surveillance remains weak. With more than half of Chad's 2024 cases linked to Cameroon, WHO stresses the urgent need for coordinated cross-border action to protect the region’s 30 million residents.

Lake Chad Basin Unites to Vaccinate 83 Million Children Against Polio Variant
Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria have launched a synchronized polio vaccination campaign targeting children under five. Running from April 24–28, the campaign aims to halt the spread of variant poliovirus type 2, which has caused 140 paralysis cases out of 210 detections in the past year.
“The Lake Chad Basin remains a critical area in our fight against polio,” said Chad’s Health Minister Abdelmadjid Abderahim. “By coming together as a region, we reinforce our commitment to ending polio once and for all.”
Supported by 1.1 million frontline workers, the initiative focuses on high-risk border areas where virus surveillance remains weak.
