Russian President Vladimir Putin and Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held talks in Moscow this Thursday.
Relations between Russia and Qatar are strengthening, with Doha being one of Moscow's key partners in the Middle East, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

"Our relations are strengthening ... Qatar is one of our priority partners in general and even more so in the Middle East," Putin said.

Russia and Qatar have enough joint projects, including in the gas and transportation sectors, the Russian president added.
Russia and Qatar are facilitating their cooperation on the direction between the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the Qatar Investment Authority.

"[Putin and Al Thani] plan to discuss ... implementation of promising joint projects in the energy, industrial, investment, cultural, and humanitarian spheres," the Kremlin said.

Furthermore, Qatar could theoretically become a platform for talks between Russia and the US, but this issue has not been specifically discussed so far, the Kremlin added.
The Emir of Qatar also expressed appreciation for the level of relations with Russia, noting there are projects and proposals to be discussed and implemented.

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

The ongoing escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip was also a topic of discussion between the two leaders. Putin noted that Qatar is making serious decisions in efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Russian leader added that a long-term settlement of the conflict is only possible on a two-state basis.

Syria

Discussing the situation in Syria, Putin stated that Russia is interested in preserving Syria as one sovereign state. He proposed that the Qatari Emir discuss Syria and humanitarian aid to the country during their talks. The Emir of Qatar, in turn, mentioned that the Syrian leader had earlier expressed his willingness to continue cooperation between Russia and Qatar during a previous meeting with him.
