El Salvador President Planning to Expand Prison for Deportees From US
10:38 17.04.2025 (Updated: 10:40 17.04.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In February, Bukele announced that El Salvador had proposed allowing the US to use its mega-prison, the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), to detain convicted criminals, including American citizens, for a fee. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington would study the proposal.
Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele plans to double the size of the world's largest prison, CECOT, where citizens deported from the United States are being held, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said.
"We have no plans to bring them [those deported from the US] back, this is a long-term solution. He has plans to double the size. He has 80-plus acres [32.3 hectares] there that he’s going to continue to build on," Noem told the US newspaper on Wednesday.
