Ghana Reclaims Its Gold: A Bold Step Toward Economic Sovereignty
With the April 30 deadline approaching for foreign actors to exit the gold trade, the government is centralizing gold sales under the newly established GoldBod to bring order, transparency, and national gain.
Dr. Lawrence Awuku-Boateng, President of the Ghana-Russia Business Development Council, supports the move as a long-overdue effort to protect the environment and harness gold for national development.
“If the implementation is done religiously, then Ghana wouldn’t have a problem because every gold that is extracted will be sold through this gold board,” he told Sputnik Africa.
GoldBod will act as the state’s exclusive buyer, paying in local currency and exporting the gold to earn foreign exchange. Awuku-Boateng sees this as a timely, strategic shift.
