Niger and Nigeria Open 'New Chapter' in Their Bilateral Relations
As the Nigerian FM made his first visit to Niger in two years, this trip was warmly received by both sides following some regional disagreements, Mansour Elh Amani, president of the Nigerien party Front patriotique pour la justice et le développement (Patriotic Front for Justice and Development), told Sputnik Africa.
"Nigeria is a partner country, a strategic nation in economic terms. In terms of security, Niger and Nigeria have worked hand in hand since the rise of Boko Haram to combat terrorism," he recalled.
The two countries also share historical ties, the official emphasized, having been part of common empires before colonization separated them.
As for the sanctions imposed on Niger while Nigeria held the presidency of ECOWAS, these cannot be attributed to Abuja alone but were the result of a collective decision, he concluded.
