After a period of tension, both countries are ready to "resume the dialogue," Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar stated during a meeting with his Nigerien counterpart Bakary Yaou Sangare in Niamey, according to Niger's Foreign Ministry.
The discussions focused on the following issues:
the fight against insecurity in the sub-region;
stronger coordination to tackle cross-border threats within joint efforts under a regional stabilization strategy;
economic integration projects, including the railway linking the two countries and the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline;
and bilateral air services, tariffs and taxes, desertification, interstate cooperation policies, migration, tourism, education, new ICTs, agriculture among other topics.
"The two ministers of foreign affairs have expressed the need to set up a Joint Consultative Forum that will bring together all relevant stakeholders of both countries to address their common challenges and explore further opportunities for the benefit of their citizens," read a joint statement.
