Mali Shuts Down Barrick Gold's Bamako Office Over Tax Dispute
The Canadian mining giant, which holds an 80% stake in the mine (with Mali owning the remaining 20%), confirmed that government departments closed its Bamako office and warned the mine could be placed under provisional administration unless operations resumed and tax obligations were met.
The tension stems from Mali’s new mining code, introduced in 2023, which seeks to boost the state's share in mineral wealth. Although an agreement to settle the dispute was signed in February, it still awaits formal approval by Mali's government.
Barrick says it’s ready to “immediately restart production” once the agreement is approved. Insiders told a Western news agency that a resolution could be reached as soon as next week.
