Ant Smugglers Busted: Kenya Exposes Global Biopiracy Ring
You might swat them away, but for the so-called "Ant Gang," Kenya’s native queen ants were worth thousands.
Four men — including two Belgians, a Vietnamese, and a Kenyan — pleaded guilty to trafficking Messor cephalotes, a rare ant species smuggled in test tubes and syringes through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
“This case not only marks a serious wildlife crime but also constitutes biopiracy,” said Kenya Wildlife Service.
Ants, it turns out, aren’t just pests — they’re prized collectibles fetching nearly €180 each in Europe’s exotic pet market.
