Expulsion of 12 French Diplomats by Algiers is 'Response to Attack on Country's Sovereignty': Expert
Abdelkader Soufi, a lecturer and researcher in geopolitics and defense policy at the University of Blida II, Algeria, commented on the Algerian authorities' reaction to the arrest of three of its nationals, including a consular officer, on French soil.
The "hostile act" of the interior minister can be attributed to "irresponsibility and a lack of understanding of political meaning and international law," he told Sputnik Africa.
The French political elites are exploiting the question of Algeria "because it is a subject that sells well", explained the researcher, noting that "this crisis is Franco-French".
According to the academic, both the French far-right and the interior minister reacted negatively to Emmanuel Macron’s decision to revisit the issue and initiate efforts to ease tensions in Franco-Algerian relations.
Soufi sees two scenarios for how the situation will evolve:
🟠The first one foresees the departure of Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau or at least a change in his position, and a return to calm.
🟠A more catastrophic scenario would involve sliding into a crisis or security deadlock.
In both cases, "this will not affect or harm Algeria in any way," the expert stated.
