Zanzibar Has Experienced Tourism Boom in 2024

Zanzibar welcomed 736,755 visitors in 2024, an increase of 15.4% compared to the 638,498 tourists who came in 2023, according to a government report.

African tourism demonstrated strong growth and its vital importance to the local economy:

🟠In 2024, 98,402 African visitors were recorded, representing 13.4% of the total arrivals, a 16.9% increase from the previous year.

🟠South Africa led the continent with 31,254 tourists (+28.6%), followed by Kenya with 23,530 (+26.2%).

🟠Other African nations contributed 40,475 visitors.

🟠Egypt experienced a slight decrease in visitors (-0.8%).

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport was the main gateway, handling 87.8% of all visitors (646,830), primarily arriving on international flights. Sea arrivals accounted for 89,925 visitors, including cruise and ferry passengers.

Visitor profile:

🟠Most visitors were leisure travelers (98.3%).

🟠Slightly more female visitors (51.9%) than male (48.1%).

🟠86% of visitors were of working age (15-64).

🟠The average stay was 8 nights.

🟠Peak occupancy in July reached 64.3%.
