Ruto Announces Agricultural Reforms to Combat Food Insecurity

The reforms are aimed at addressing an impending maize shortage, boosting farmer incomes, and reducing Kenya's reliance on imports.

Speaking in Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenyan President William Ruto defended current initiatives, highlighting the positive impact of subsidized fertilizer on maize yields. He also tasked Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe with accelerating the adoption of modern technologies.

Key measures announced by the president include:

🟠Dismantling cartels in the agriculture supply chain;
🟠Addressing poor farming practices and limited access to inputs;
🟠Implementing reforms in the coffee, dairy, and sugar sectors through input subsidies, better pricing, and guaranteed markets.

Beyond agriculture, Ruto announced plans to secure about $4.6 million from the African Development Bank to expand electricity access in Elgeyo Marakwet, aiming to connect 17,000 homes, up from the current 10,000.
