Somalia Registers Voters for First Time in Decades
Ahead of local elections slated for June, the voters' registration will begin on Tuesday.
This marks the first time in nearly 50 years that Mogadishu residents will register to vote, Commission chairperson Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan commented.
President Mohamud pledged in 2023 to transition Somalia away from its traditional clan-based voting system. The Cabinet has since approved bills to establish one-person, one-vote presidential elections, planned for 2026.
The 2022 election utilized the 4.5 clan-based system, which allocates parliamentary seats among major and minority clans.
Somalia has not held direct elections since 1967.
