Togo's Gnassingbe Appointed AU Mediator in DRC Conflict
President Faure Gnassingbe replaces Angolan President Joao Lourenco, who stepped down last month after being appointed in 2022. The AU confirmed the new appointee's mission to mediate between the DRC and Rwanda over ongoing insecurity in the region.
Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in Gnassingbe, stating he will actively contribute to the search for sustainable peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
This mediation effort comes as numerous ceasefires and truces brokered in the DRC conflict since late 2021 have repeatedly failed.
