Sudanese Athletics Icon Abu Bakr Kaki Killed in El Fasher, Media Reports
Kaki was killed by a Janjaweed militia shell in his home, local media reported. It added that the attack, part of a series targeting civilians, also injured Kaki's family members.
According to the media, Kaki had returned to the city, which is the capital of North Darfur state, to support his family during the humanitarian crisis there. He was known for his patriotism and peace advocacy.
Kaki represented Sudan in the Olympics and world championships, winning youth gold in 2008, as well as African titles.
According to the media, Kaki's death prompted calls for an investigation into Janjaweed's crimes against Darfur civilians.
