US Special Envoy Steven Witkoff has told US President Donald Trump that the fastest way to achieve ceasefire in Ukraine is to recognize the Donetsk People's Republic, the Lugansk People's Republic, and the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions as part of Russia, the British news agency reported on Friday, citing sources. Witkoff arrived in Saint Petersburg earlier on in the day to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Direct Investment Fund chief Kirill Dmitriev to discuss the situation in Ukraine. US special envoy on Russia and Ukraine Keith Kellogg was also present and expressed his disagreement with Witkoff, suggesting that Kiev would never agree to simply give up its claim on the four regions. The meeting concluded without Trump making changes to the US approach. The news agency reports that there is an increasing disagreement within the administration on the best way forward. The Ukrainian regions of Zaporozhye and Kherson, as well as the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, voted in a referendum in September 2022 to become part of Russia. All four regions were formally incorporated into Russia soon after.
