The Berlin Half Marathon took place last Sunday, with Ethiopian runner Fotyen Tesfay dominating the women’s race. She crossed the finish line in a record time of 63 minutes and 35 seconds, marking the fifth-fastest performance in history. With this achievement, Tesfay becomes the first woman to hold two of the five fastest times ever recorded.
Africa is a continent of winners, Fotyen Tesfay, who set a new half marathon record, told Sputnik Africa.
"This is a victory that helps me to find myself. For Ethiopia, it is also a victory showing that the country is training new athletes," the athlete noted.
The runner also criticized the suspension of Russian athletes from international tournaments, echoing the words of former Ethiopian Athletics Federation president and two-time Olympic champion Haile Gebreselassie.
"Sports and politics do not mix because sport is a source of love and unity. It brings humanity closer, giving love to one another, unites countries, connects the world, and symbolizes peace and harmony," she argued.
