The charges relate to a YouTube video posted last week in which the opposition party's chair claimed that candidates in the 2024 local elections "were disqualified under the [Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan's] instructions," while police were used to fabricate election results, and accuse judges of political corruption.
The chairman of the Tanzanian opposition party, the Party for Democracy and Progress (Chadema), Tundu Lissu, has been charged with treason over a video, where he claimed 2024 local election candidates were "disqualified" on the president's orders, the Citizen news portal reported on Thursday.
The police arrested Lissu on Wednesday during a political rally on suspicion of inciting the cancellation of the 2025 general elections, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, the opposition politician was charged with treason in the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court, the news portal reported, specifying that the case was adjourned to April 24.
The Wednesday rally was a part of Chadema's "No Reforms, No Election" campaign, which calls for reforming the Tanzanian electoral legislation ahead of the 2025 general elections, expected to be held in October.
