Ethiopia’s Military Power: A Continental Force to Reckon With
Ethiopia ranks 5th out of 38 African countries in the 2025 Global Firepower Index—and for good reason. Here's what makes its army one of the strongest on the continent:
Budget & Manpower:
Over $2 billion defense budget;
162,000 active personnel including 5,000 Air Force and 10,000 Navy.
Land Power:
7,256 armored vehicles;
338 tanks;
Artillery strength: 35 self-propelled, 309 towed, and 40 MLRS.
Air Strength:
🟢103 aircraft including 25 fighters;
🟢33 helicopters (7 attack), and 34 trainer aircraft.
Logistics Advantage:
Massive labor force: 61 million+;
57 airports, 659 km of railways, 120,000+ km of roads;
12 merchant marine fleets for mobility and supply.
