Russia Supports Algeria in Its Struggle to Hold France Accountable for Colonialism, FM Spokeswoman Says
Russia also supports Algeria's efforts to seek reparations for the past and present grave consequences of colonization and neocolonialism, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
"France can no longer suppress the independence and sovereignty of peoples," the Russian official told a media briefing.
The colonial legacy of Paris is a historical fact, and its crimes "are still painful to many peoples" of the world, she emphasized.
In January, Algerian parliament speaker Ibrahim Boughali pushed for a law against French colonialism over "repeated French attacks" aiming to harm Algeria's image. The current crisis between Algeria and France requires addressing colonial accountability, he noted.
