French Language: Instrument of Colonization?
French lost its status as an official language in Niger under the Charter of Refoundation, but the language had "lost all its influence anyway," Pan-Africanist Anawar Abdoulaye told Sputnik Africa.
According to him, withdrawing from the International Organization of La Francophonie can also help the AES countries revalue local languages, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently noted.
"Language has been an instrument of colonization, which has not valued local languages throughout the AES confederation. Leaving the Francophonie will push us to strengthen these local languages, their learning, and to cultivate a sense of belonging," Abdoulaye said.
Mali, which also reduced French to a working language, led the way, he said.
"Mali is succeeding in this challenge, and I think Niger will succeed in its own. What is certain is that you cannot fight an ideology, a policy, or a culture and continue to use it or depend on that language," concluded the Pan-Africanist.
