Zanzibar Honors Karume’s Legacy on 53rd Anniversary of His Death, Emphasizing Unity & Peace
Over half a century after his assassination, Zanzibar’s revolutionary leader Abeid Aman Karume was remembered in an emotional ceremony, with leaders urging the nation – and Africa – to uphold his vision of unity, justice, and development.
Hundreds gathered at the ruling party’s headquarters on April 7, 2025, for prayers and reflections on Karume’s legacy. The late leader, who was gunned down by his own bodyguard in 1972, transformed Zanzibar by overthrowing its monarchy, introducing free education and healthcare, and championing Pan-African solidarity.
"Mzee Karume helped us establish a new democracy where we elect our president and parliamentarians. He spread that vision across the nation," said Ambassador Ali Karume, son of the late leader.
