Algeria Closes Airspace to Mali Amid Rising Tensions
Algeria cited repeated airspace violations. The move follows the controversial downing of a Malian drone at the end of March, which Algeria says re-entered its airspace on an "offensive trajectory."
Key developments:
▪Drone Incident: Algeria confirmed it shot down a Malian reconnaissance drone. Mali said it was 9.5 km from the border;
▪Diplomatic Fallout: Algeria recalled its ambassadors to Mali and Niger and delayed sending one to Burkina Faso;
▪AES Response: Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso recalled their envoys, accusing Algeria of blocking a counter-terrorism operation;
▪Accusations Fly: AES calls the drone downing "irresponsible" and a breach of international law; Algiers called the claims "serious and false."
